Hey, everybody. It's Lisa Kelly again. So, I'm gonna talk about hairspray. It's gonna be a really short video today because hairspray is hairspray, and there's not a lot to it, although we seem to miss the boat even on not a lot there. But, this is important.
This is an important, important category.
And I know you that you guys realize that, you know, when you have a stylist and even yourselves, when you have a hairspray that you love, that's it. I mean, that is it. You are not changing your hairspray.
You love it. What what we have to do is get every single one of your clients to love one of the ones that you have. Of course, they're all a little different, but I'm sure, you know, after trying so many that you have enough variety to have this conversation.
You put it in maybe put one in one side, and then you spray the hair with the other side. And then you have them go home when when you're done with the hair so they can see how it feels, how each side feels.
But this is a huge category. It's so small. It's such a small category, but it's such a huge category for the sales that happen in this one little area.
But let's let's start. Let's go back to the beginning and start at the basics.
So, really, for the nuts and bolts for dealing with clients and, you know, on every professional station that that is out there that you guys are working, you should have a pump and an aerosol.
You know, you might have more than one pump in your salon with the different lines you have, and you might have more more than one aerosol.
You should switch them every five weeks. You know, get a different can and a different pump and try them, and let people try and feel the difference and have you introduce them to different hairsprays. We have to get away from this, well, I love this one. I work with this one.
This is all I want. Because you're a professional. You should be able to work with everything. And this is how you learn how each one of these products work by using one can on twenty thousand different textures so you get a feel and understanding for it, or one pump, you know, on twenty different textures so you get a feel and understanding of what that does.
But this is a huge category. It's got a lot of big topics, but it's a very small thing.
But always have a pump and an aerosol.
You know, first off the checklist when we're talking about this before we actually go to use hairspray.
You have to ask the This is something we do automatically without thinking that we need to ask.
We have a very, very small percentage of clients that will actually stop you midway from you going to spray that on her hair, And those are the ones who are brave enough not to hurt your feelings.
But so many will have you do the spray, and then they hate it, and they go home and wash their hair.
One way one small way to know if your clients really don't like this is the ones that say, oh, don't bother with the blow dry. I'm just gonna go home anyway. They're sort of telling you, I don't like what styling product you're putting in my hair. I don't like the hairspray.
I don't like the way you're blow drying it. So they just up and go because who doesn't love the professional blow dry? For the few who don't, there might be a reason in there. Maybe it's the styling, maybe it's the finishing, but please ask and don't just assume.
So the question to the client is, hairspray? Yes or no? And do you want pump or aerosol?
If she's an aerosol girl and you use a pump, she's mad. If she's a pump girl and you use an aerosol, she's mad. Let's not let's not make these dumb mistakes with our clients. Let's not think it through at a customer service level.
This is a customer service thing, not a hairdresser's thing, a customer service thing. So first, we're just gonna ask the question. Would you like hair spray? And if so, do you want pump or aerosol?
That's why you should have one of each on your station. That's first and foremost because she's gonna say pump, aerosol, or nothing. And then you don't put step, you know, step on yourself and put your foot in your mouth and do something she didn't like and and all of these other silly things that can happen behind the chair.
So right off the bat. Now, let's talk about hair color.
Hairspray is absolutely terrible for hair color. It is like the biggest color killer. You know, you drop color on your clothes in in the swan, you get some color stain on her or yourself. Just grab a can of hairspray and spray it.
It'll come out like that. If it takes it out of your clothes like that, it's gonna take it out of your hair like that. It is a huge color killer. So before we start investigating, you know, what shampoo she's using and all these other things that she may be doing at home, why she's complaining to you about fading, the first question is, hairspray.
You know, is is she a junky with it? Is she caking it on every day? Because it's gonna kill your color. So we have to be mindful of that.
With that said, day of color, you do her hair that day. I would avoid hairspray if you can.
You know, if it's no big deal, don't don't use it. Or you say to her, I'd rather not, but if you want it, I will. You know, I just don't like to put it on fresh hair color.
You know, we kinda want the hair color to cure a little bit. We don't we we don't wanna go killing it with fresh hairspray the day that we do it. I mean, blondes, I I necessarily don't mind too much with the blondes because we just took all their color out. Unless you did some sort of toner or color after you lightened her, then you might wanna avoid the hairspray.
They're they're getting really strict, the the the states and the government, about the hairsprays.
Lowering the VOCs of volatile organic compounds and the CFCs, the chlorofluorocarbons that are in there and trying to make them more environmentally friendly. I mean, I would not be surprised in some short order in in so many years that, you know, alls we have is pump. So different states are condensing their laws to getting lower and lower VOC limit. So they're getting wetter and wetter.
So it is something for us to consider as a profession for our future. Where where are we gonna be in the future with hairspray?
And you have a lot of clients who are very, environmentally sound. Whether you are or you're not, it doesn't really matter because this is about customer service.
So if she's, you know, one if she if she's that way and very concerned about the environment, but the last thing you wanna do is pull out a can of hairspray and start spraying her hair with it. We have to think before we start doing things, and I know that we work in a routine and a habit behind the chair and we get into this groove, but you can't. Soon as you get into a groove and you're doing the same thing the same way, your career starts to end. You your your latitude collapses.
Your creativity, you're not broadening your horizons. You're you're subtracting from them. And hairspray is a big, touchy subject with a lot of people. So first off, do yourself the favor by asking Make sure you have one of each.
Get permission to use it on her. Think about your hair color. Think about, you know, what are you trying to achieve. Is it spray it and, you want it to hold all day?
Or do you wanna spray it and have it flexible that you can run your hands through it? That's what air gel is. Air gel is probably one of the most popular hairsprays, in the country. If you've not tried it, tried it.
It's a working spray. You spray. You can brush through it later. Has a bit of a memory.
It is hugely popular across the country and with consumers.
They also have it in a great pocketbook size, which makes life great for traveling and all that. Of course, I travel, so I always have one of these in my travel bags at all times.
But this is a this is a big, big subject for environmental, environmental clients, hair color, personal preference, all of these things. There there's only four or five of them, but they're big. They're big issues with people having you put hairspray on them. We kind of fluff it off like, oh, we're just putting a little hairspray in, but it's not.
Really want you to think about what you're doing when it comes to this subject and having conversations. And again, people who love their hairspray, they're so, so monogamous with it. They will use it till the end of time. So it's for us as professionals to try the different ones in the salon whether you like it personally or not.
You may hate it, but she loves it, but that's part of that customer service aspect of being a professional, is knowing the difference and then being able to make a professional recommendation for what's best for her.
You know, I brought out this little can here. You know, there's a few of these guys out there. This is this is just a an arrow shine spray. It's just shine, but it's aero.
It comes out like hairspray, but it's shine. It is freaking phenomenal if you've never tried, one of these aerosol sprays. They are so great. Before flat ironing, before curling iron, They are awesome just at the end.
Little different than your pump silicone sprays, which can be a little bit heavier. These things are phenomenal.
They kinda go in the hair spray category because they're in a can and because they have a delivery system. But if you've never tried an AeroShine product, and that's actually what this is called. It's called AeroShine by Tri, and you can find it on coastline e d u dot com.
Try one.
Try one, you know, before flat iron, before curling iron. It's it's amazing. Now remember, the silicone and the shine in that is gonna give you more thermal protection. Silicone is a great thermal protector, and it's a great UV protector.
So if you haven't tried one of these guys, give it a try. And and remember the lessons of the hairspray class.
It's only a few issues, but they're big. They're very personal to people, environmentally or what they prefer or don't prefer in their hair, how they want it to feel when it's all done.
These are big, big issues in in two very small products, a pump and an aerosol.
Let's do the job right. Let's ask permission.
Let's consider hair color, consider her personal preferences, and be able to have the ability to try a variety of them so we can make professional recommendations to our clients and and and be the professional that we're trying to be. So I hope we got something good out of today with the hairspray, and, you know, what's life without hairspray?
